Sgt Fitters Resigns over Moonshining?

03/06/07

Talk about a new twist. Rumor has it our own Sgt. Fitters was making some “Home Brew” (apparently it something like a mix of Apple Cider and Everclear ) and distributing it to some of our local taverns. After a year of accusations; providing alcohol to minors (Was it his “Home Brew”?) & pressuring a 20 year old girl to have sex.
He served a 60 day unpaid suspension for the above accusations. He is currently being investigated by the state Department of Revenue's Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement division. See the connection?

While I personally had no problems with the ex Sergeant it was high time that a man who thought he was above the law is no longer able to “Protect and Serve” the people of Evansville.

Let’s hope the Police Commission really does it’s homework before hiring Fitters replacement. It’s been a rough last year for the Police Department. Officer Jones and the $25,000.00 judgment. Officer Booth’s resignation? (That still pisses me off he was the best cop we had in this city.) and now this.

If this kind of behavior continues the next time the Police Commission gets together to hire someone it may be a new Police Chief.

The best cops we have are our own hometown boys -- McElroy and Phillips. Hire someone local, someone who everyone knows and you'll get a good cop.

So what about the bars that were buying the moonshine? Why aren't their names in the paper? Why? Because they are not cops. If this had happened in Madison, where everybody doesn't know all the cop's business, it would not have been as big a deal.

Wow...looks like real comments, sort of.

Here is my take.

While the police police the people, who polices the police?

Somehow somebody somewhere was watching Sgt., err, Mr. Fitters, so who was that somebody and what was the something seen?

Anony #2,

I would disagree. Granted it was cocaine and not moonshine, but a few years back the Jocko's Rocketship incident in Madison (firefighters trafficking cocaine at this now closed bar) got quite a bit of press.

I think its about time he left. I strongly disagree with anony 2, he did something illegal and he should be nailed for it. At this point we don't know that the bars won't end up in trouble for this at some point. I can guarantee you if Officers Fitters had caught someone doing the same he would have busted there ass. For to long now Fitters has thought he is above the law. I can not say enough good things about Art, I think he is the only ethical one left out of the entire bunch. McElroy used to run such a tight ship, you could not poke a hole in , not anymore. My question would be why was Fitters ever put back on night duty? Thats when the issues arose with the young girls, and there was talk with the police and fire commission that he had to be watched better. Theres been several different issues witht he E.P.D. over the last couple years and one would have to wonder what changed??? They like to come off as though they are on a higher level than the rest of us poor folks in Evansville, but they are not. Art is the only one who comes across as grounded and honest.

I really pissed off they chased officer Booth out of town. besides Art he is the only one that can define ethics. They run booth off and keep fitters? What is wrong with that picture?

do we really want a officer they have to watch ? I thought what a odd thing to say about a police officer when I read that in the minutes from the meeting. Glad hes gone.

So what happened with Booth? Was he the one dipping into the petty cash?

The police commission (a committee made of local citizens) polices the police. Mayor's husband is on the police commission. Looks like they've been busy of late.

I would not put the stealing of petty cash past fitter, needs to money to make the moonshine.

Listen everyone, calm down. Fitters resigned because he is training for American Idol. I just read it in another post by Paula Abdul no less so you know that it is not a rumor.

Re the Jones issue. Has anyone else thought maybe its time to find a new city attorney? Our attorney offers the woman $400,000 to settle, which she turns down. But the judge only gives her $25,000. Me thinks our attorney is throwing our tax money around a little loosely.
Oh and anyone else think maybe the lady who sued is going to appeal the measly $25,000?

DO your homework. The city's attorney had nothing to do with the Jones case. It was the attorney for the insurance company. Remember liability insurers have TWO responsibilities, to indemnify & to DEFEND.

Do you have any other complaints against the city attorney or just the ERRONEOUS one?

It's fun to post anonymously then it doesn't matter if you are wrong or just a plain idiot.

You're not as smart as you think. OK so I f-uped and it wasn't city attorney -- my apologies to him. No other complaints about him.

BUT what happens when you make a claim on your insurance? Hmmm? Insurance rates go up. So the city's insurance rate goes up. Duhhh. We're gonna end up paying for it either way.

I think its pretty clear anony no. 12!!! works for the city. They complained about people posting anony, then they do the same. I work for a insurance co, and my question would be, whats the city's ded.? They had to be paid first, the ins. company did not pick up the whole tab. Secondly you claim to many ' claims' and your ded. can be raised by the insurance company. What is the city's ded???? It would not be a little one like we have on our homes, that I know for a fact.

I think all this talk about the police dept in general, what they the police dept should know by know, and if they don't I will tell them. We do expect you to behave better than most on duty and in your private life. Second you don't just get respect because you are a police officer, you have to earn it like everyone else...I am not impressed by you just because of what you do for a livng, but by the kind of human being you are, and how you treat people on and off duty. I think thats why Art gets the respect he does, because of how he treats people. If you don't like the standards you need to live by as a police officer than don't let us continue your wages , find a different line of work

Will the city's premiums go up?

Who heere can answer that?

Otherwise that one anon poster owned you.

Its very possible the ins. rates will go up, thats a sizable pay out regardless of the ded,.

I see he has officially been charged, I wonder how that feels for him? For how little he claims to have made, i wonder why he bothered.

It was a hobby of course. We all want to share our hobbies. Plus, when you're short on cash, every little bit helps. Perhaps he didn't think it was such a big deal, I don't. Why the hell aren't the businesses who bought getting in trouble?
